There were no real surprises on the first night of the high school playoffs in Ohio and Kentucky, but there were a few close calls.
Undefeated Wyoming, which won a squeaker against Indian Hill to end the regular season last weekend, needed another late touchdown to get by Eaton 34-32. Isiah Nearor scored the winning touchdown with two minutes to go.
Also in Division III play, Springfield Shawnee ousted Goshen 28-7 and Monroe advanced with a 12-7 victory over Chaminade Julienne.
In Division II, Winton Woods drilled Ross 59-7. Jeremiah Goins had three touchdowns for the Warriors. Turpin took Wilmington 44-21, but Mount Healthy was eliminated by Trotwood-Madison 41-6.
The only local action in Division V saw perennial power Coldwater drub Badin 41-0.
Nationally ranked Highlands had no difficulty in advancing past round one of the Kentucky playoffs. The Bluebirds crushed Montgomery County 60-13.
Also in Class 5A, Dixie beat Ashland Blazer 41-14 and Scott fell to Johnson Central 41-6.
Simon Kenton won its tenth game of the season over Butler 49-7. Travis Elliott
scored three touchdowns in Ryle's 52-22 victory over Pleasure Ridge Park. Dupont Manual won a shootout over Conner 50-39, and Louisville St. Xavier dropped Boone County 42-0.
Only one local team is alive in Class 4-A. Greg Clemmons rushed for 70 yards and scored two touchdowns in the Holmes 42-0 victory over East Jessamine.
Newport Central Catholic beat Carroll County 63-19 in Class 2A. And Holy Cross won its playoff opener over Owens County 48-10. Markel Walker of Holy Cross had three touchdowns and two interceptions. But Newport fell to DeSales 55-8.
Beechwood began its playoff run by blasting Trimble County 54-0. Bellevue was all over Gallatin County 55-0. Brossart fell to Frankfort 16-7, and Eminence eliminated Ludlow 30-12.
Indiana advanced to its third weekend of tournament play. The Batesville Bulldogs
won their sectional over Hamilton Hts 27-6. The Trojans of East Central stayed alive with a sectional championship victory over Shelbyville 21-17.
