A favorite Tri-State wintertime activity is getting national attention.

TripAdvisor, which calls itself the world's largest travel community, has named the U.S. Bank Ice Rink on Fountain Square one of the top 10 bargain outdoor skating rinks in the nation.

The list was created after an online poll of 1,600 travelers.

The organization ranked the skating rink ninth overall in its newsletter, mainly thanks to the affordable cost.

The Fountain Square ice rink costs just $2.50 for admission and $2.50 to rent skates.

Additionally, Tri-State residents can enjoy the ice rink for free on New Year's Eve thanks to local law firm Strauss & Troy.

Free skating begins at 8 p.m. The Kroger's New Year's Eve Blast on the square also includes a DJ, heated tent, food and beverages.  The night ends with a fireworks display to welcome 2009.
