Sunday was the big night for the Akers family of West Chester.
Their story aired on ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
Hundreds of people joined the Akers at a viewing party at the family's church.
Sunday night's broadcast of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition was the culmination of so much love and hard work from the community.
The Akers' church, Princeton Pike Church of God, as well as their teachers, neighbors and friends all worked together to get this family on the show.
Many of them sat together in the church to witness the miracles that can happen when a community comes together.
For the Akers family, this day was a dream come true.
The Extreme Home Makeover team - in one week - changed their lives forever.
The Akers sat among friends, family, and a few hundred of the volunteers that helped build their house. They laughed, cried, and shared their story with a nationwide audience.
"It was very emotional at times and it was exciting and I'm so glad people came out to watch it with us, family friends, and volunteers that were there," Ginger Akers said.
"For them to give of themselves, time, materials and energy and labor and money it's just very special and we're very grateful for that," Greg Akers said.
They are forever grateful they say, for a house that now fits their family. There's room for the girls to go wherever they want. no more does mom have to carry them up and down steps.
"They can go and brush their own teeth, get a brush for their hair, get a drink from the fridge, just little things people wouldn't think of that I was constantly going and getting for them," Ginger Akers added.
The girls are enjoying their rooms. Four-year-old Faith loves her butterfly room and eight-year-old Brooke says the angels in her room are comforting to her.
"And there's a little headboard above my bed with angels and I like that because when I go to bed I know I'm safe because I can see angels."
Ten-year-old Christian loves his new baseball room! He says it's the coolest room ever and meeting Bronson Arroyo was like a dream. "I was really he was one of my favorites and you could see on the show, i wasn't breathing as well i was like ahhh."
The Akers admit they're still pinching themselves.
"There's so much mental stress lifted as well as physical stress and I think that combination is just helping our health and helping us enjoy life better," Greg Akers said.
For Ginger Akers, she says she can be a fun mom now rather than feel like a nurse all the time.
Their lives are so much less stressful and they are able to really enjoy life together. That's thanks to one terrific television show and an amazing community!
