Widespread power outages may have contributed to a fatal fire that claimed the life of a pregnant woman in St. Bernard Monday morning.
Firefighters believe a candle being used for light in a home without power in the 4000 block of Leonard Avenue possibly ignited the fire around 4 a.m.
Rescue crews tried to rescue the 18-year-old woman from the second floor of the burning home, but the intense smoke and flames prevented them from reaching her in time.
The woman and her unborn child were killed in the fire. Her name has not yet been released.
The official cause of the fire is under investigation.
