Virginia Tech Massacre Leads To Changes At Miami

The Virginia Tech massacre has led to changes at all three of Miami University's campuses.

You can now find a lock on the inside of every Miami Middletown classroom door.

"We've put emergency locks on each classroom so that students will have the opportunity along with faculty and staff to actually lock the door," said Associate Dean for Students James Ewers Junior.

The lock could keep an active shooter, like the one at Virginia Tech, from getting to more potential victims.

The idea for the emergency lockdown came several months before the deadly shootings at Virginia Tech.

An emergency text message system was also implemented for all three of Miami's campuses; Middletown, Hamilton and Oxford.

Claire Wagner, Miami University Spokesperson said, "After Virginia Tech the main cry was was, you didn't tell people quickly enough. Right or wrong because there's so much detail behind that, we thought well perhaps there's an immediate system we can use."

Students, faculty and staff put their cell phone number into a computer system and they'll get a text notifying them of a problem before so they can take cover.

"We have made it clear that MU will only use the text messaging system in case of imminent danger or entire campus closure," said Wagner.

So far, more than 3,000 people have signed up through the Miami University police website.

University officials hope they never have to use the text messaging system.
