One of our favorite movies in the Channel 9 newsroom is "Anchorman", but is a new cologne out depicted in the film a joke too? The Good Morning Tri-State team checked it out in their Try-It-Out-Tuesday segment.
The 2004 Will Ferrell comedy classic Anchorman features Ron Burgundy as a San Diego television news anchor. In addition to a lot of laughs about the business we are in, it also features some unforgettable moments, including one where the characters select a pungent cologne to try and impress a new anchor.
The cologne, called "Sex Panther", previously only existed in the movie. But it is now available through Romane Fragrances, an Illinois company.
"What cologne you going to go with. London Gentleman, no, no, wait, hold on, Black Beard's Delight? No she gets a special cologne, it's called Sex Panther," says a clip from the movie.
"Sex Panther? Smells like Drakkar, from the 1990's, remember," said Amy Hunter from Northern Kentucky. She was one of several people 9News asked to review the cologne on the streets of Downtown Cincinnati.
"It's quite pungent, it's a formidable scent, it stings the nostrils, in a good way," says Burgundy in the movie. But luckily, this cologne doesn't follow that Hollywood script, because we found this kitty's scent is more purr than bite. "It's not real overpowering, I like that about it," said Domenico Salzano, of Cincinnati.
"I think it is a little woodsy (smelling) actually," said Hunter. That description is a bit different that how the cologne is humorously portrayed in the film. "It's made of real bits of panther," says a clip from Anchorman.
So will this cat have more than nine lives? "I think it might do good, it is a popular movie," said Salzano. "It's nice, I like it," said Hunter.
As far as other promises made in the movie? That is for you to figure out. "They've done studies you know, 60 percent of the time, it works every time," says a clip.
The Good Morning Tri-State team seemed a bit mixed in their reviews. Kathrine thought it smelled "soapy", while Lance thought "it might peel the paint off the studio walls." Denise and Larry both like it however.
Sex Panther was just released for about $35 dollars online. For more information, click on the link attached to this story.
Later this week, on Good Morning Tri-State, we'll be giving away bottles of Sex Panther to our viewers, be sure to stay tuned. As always, Try-It-Out-Tuesday is an unscientific test, with unscientific results.
