Police Officer Critically Injured After Crash

WEST CHESTER, Ohio -- A West Chester police officer is fighting for his life after he crashed his cruiser early Tuesday morning.

Police say Officer Nicholas Gattermeyer was responding to a burglary call when he lost control and hit a utility pole then a tree near Dimmick Road and Friar Tuck Drive around 1:45 a.m.

Gattermeyer, 24, was transported to University Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

He has been with the West Chester Police Department since 2008.

The burglary was reported at a home on Barrett Road.

West Chester Police Chief Erik Niehaus gave a brief statement outside of University Hospital. He is asking everyone to pray for Officer Gattermeyer and his family during this difficult time.

An update on Gattermeyer's condition has not been released.
