NORWOOD -- A woman was forced to jump from the third floor of her apartment building after a fire early Wednesday morning in Norwood.

It happened around 1:30 a.m. in the 4000 block of Lafayette Avenue.

The fire left a total of 21 people displaced. The Red Cross is helping out the nine families forced from their homes.

The cause of fire is believed to have been a woman who fell asleep while smoking on the second floor.

Investigators tell 9News that the woman who jumped to safety suffered an ankle injury.

The fire remains under investigation.
