On the day that Cincinnati's city manager is scheduled to send his recommendations for cutting over 300 city jobs to the Civil Service Commission, Mayor Mark Mallory is due to meet with union leaders and other city administrators to see if there are any alternatives.

At 9 Friday morning, Mayor Mallory is scheduled to talk with them about the proposed layoffs of over 300 city workers, which aims to close a budget gap that's already reached $28 million.

If a meeting Thursday night at the Duke Energy Center is any indication, the talks in the mayor's office Friday could be very contentious and emotional.

Among the proposed cuts from City Manager Milton Dohoney: 138 Cincinnati Police officers, 62 other unionized city workers and at least 9 non-represented city employees.

At Thursday's meeting, many city employees and union leaders said they were frustrated, angry and desperate for any alternatives to layoffs.

Some city union leaders say they've rejected calls to make concessions like unpaid furloughs because they don't trust city budget figures and they don't want to make any concessions unless they can totally prevent layoffs.

We'll see if this meeting can come up with some compromise between the city and its unions.
