MASON, Ohio -- Some 400 teams of diving dogs made quite a splash in Mason this weekend.

Five thousand spectators turned out to see the canines in action for the 2009 Cabela's National Dock Dogs Championships at the Kings Island Resort and Conference Center.

The dogs dove into four specially constructed pools of water, and were judged for height of jump and the speed with which they retrieved objects among other things.

The teams could also compete for the title of Iron Dog.

Morgan Jarvis came all the way from Canada with a group of competitors seen cheering enthusiastically at the side of one pool.

"We came all the way over here because Dock Dogs is fun and we had a great time with our dogs and our whole Ontario Dock Dogs Club came up and we're just having a great time," said Jarvis.

All proceeds benefit the American College of Veterinary Medicine to help fund studies to fight canine cancer.
