HARRISON, Ohio -- People lined the sidewalks of Harrison Avenue in Harrison Tuesday night to get a first hand look at local history come to life.

Harrison resident Tom Petree says, "We are fortunate to have anything that promotes the history of our local community and this is probably one of the biggest events that happened during the 1800s for Harrison, as far as excitement goes."

The crowd watched as a group of Civil War reenactors replayed General John Hunt Morgan's historic raid on the town from 1863.

The only difference? 146 years ago, there were 2,000 soldiers. Today? A dozen riders filled the main thoroughfare.

Local author and historian Lester V. Horowitz wrote a book that chronicled General Morgan's raid.

"Can you imagine a town with two, three hundred people and you have 2,000 men march through your town? They all went outside and watched them like a parade,” said Horowitz.

Even today, General Morgan is a controversial figure.

Horowitz said, "To the Northerners, he was a villain because he stole their horses, but down South, he was the thunderbird of the Confederacy, and he was a hero to the people."

But time heals all wounds, according to some.

"Although he did some bad things, it's history," said Harrison resident Helen Weber.

Controversy aside, Harrison residents just enjoy seeing a peek into the past.

"We're history crazy, so we enjoy it," said Harrison resident Tom Petree.
