Budget Woes May Mean Hamilton County Employee Layoffs

Some Hamilton County's employees may be laid off because of a projected $30 million deficit in the 2008 budget.

That was the somber message contained in letter dated October 8, 2007, and sent to 6,800 workers by Hamilton County Administrator Patrick Thompson.

In the letter Thompson wrote that county revenues are not keeping pace with inflation and efforts to "grow" income without raising taxes aren't working.

So, "significant reductions" will be made "across all departments," he wrote. "The 2008 budget will include staff reductions."

The exact number has not been finalized.

Thompson says county severance policies will be followed and that incentives for early retirement are being studied.
