Simple Acts Of Kindness

Last Update: 3/11/2007 9:10 pm
I guess I started thinking about it in the midst of the political season. I can't remember when I've heard ads with so much mud slinging and mean-spirited remarks.

That, combined with what appears to be a string of unusually violent and cruel crimes in our community increased my appreciation for simple acts of kindness.

You know, acts like taking extra time to listen to someone who needs an ear, even if you are in a hurry. Or sending a card to an older person who lives alone. Or waving another car into a great parking space that is rightfully yours. Just simple things we can all do and hopefully have all experienced in some way.

My photographer, Andy, and I set out to talk to people about a time when they experienced kindness. They could also thank someone for a kindness or tell when they shared a simple act of kindness.

Well my first attempt failed. People didn't quite understand. Responses ranged from "I want to thank my mom for giving me life" to "I'd like to find a kind person to help me pay off my law school loans."

But I would not give up. I made a display board that gave examples of "Simple Acts of Kindness" and took it on the road with me. I think it helped.

I want to hear from you. Tell me when you've experience a simple act of kindness or shared kindness with others. Email me at anewday@wcpo.com.
