Parents who watched popular children's cough medicines pulled from store shelves last week are now scratching their heads.
We're heading into cold and flu season, so how can we help our children get through it?
We asked the experts at Cincinnati Children's Hospital how to best treat our children without cough medicine.
The advice -- keep it simple.
Use a *cool* mist humidifier, not hot. Cool mist will shrink the nasal passages. Warm-mist will expand the tissue.
Give your children plenty of liquids to fight off the cold.
Another tip: Saline drops.
And suction bulbs work well for babies' noses. For toddlers, keep the tissues handy.
Dr. Amy Guiot says pain medicine is ok if their is pain or a fever.
"If they're in any pain you can certainly use plain tylenol or plain advil or motrin products -- just for pain, nothing with cough or cold stuff in it," says Dr. Guiot, a pediatrician with Cincinnati Children's Hospital.
The cough medications recalled involved medicines for children under two, which can be dangerous if misused.
