This weekend, I time travelled back to the 80s.
I'll admit it. I rocked the side ponytail, big shaker sweater and tight-rolled jeans back in the day. This time around, though, I was a much better dressed version of myself.
It started with the death of Michael Jackson. He personified the 80s, with his single glove and white socks and studded red leather jacket. Everyone knows how to do the "Thriller" dance and the "Beat It" moves. And everyone has a Michael Jackson memory.
Take away the craziness of what has happened in his life since then ... but his music was the soundtrack of the 80s. I remember my dad bringing home the "Thriller" album and me grabbing the lyric sheet and climbing a tree in our backyard, refusing to come down 'til I learned every song. (Side note: "Human Nature" is still my favorite).
My sister Lindsay made fun of me at the time, but now she thinks it's kind of cool that I still know every song on that album. And that's another reason I was back in the world of blue eyeshadow and Members Only jackets. I haven't lived under the same roof as my sister since 1991. She visited this weekend and I felt like I was right back in high school again. Admittedly, we probably acted like we were. For that, I publicly apologize to my husband, who had the misfortune of witnessing it.
And WHY she was here was another reason I was channeling Different Strokes and Facts of Life. We went to the New Kids on the Block concert Saturday night at Riverbend. It was FANTASTIC. We were 20 years older, rolling up to the concert in a minivan. Come to think of it, that's probably how we would have gotten there back then. In summation, Joey's till the cute one, but Jon's my favorite. I always liked the underdog. I'm totally gonna buy their new tape. Like, totally.
My favorites from today's GMTS:
--Banding Together: This one also takes me back to the 80s and my days in the school band. Larry Handley joined his former Mt. Healthy band members for an alumni concert this weekend, which also held special significance since the school also announced it's naming the new auditorium for the band director, Russell Hinkle. Larry also informed us that he didn't care so much for concert band, because as a member of the percussion section, his job essentially consisted of counting out 45 measures between cymbal crashes.
--Face to Face with Bernie: To file this under "favorites" is a stretch, but I have to find a place to make my case. Bernie Madoff's lawyer wants him to be sentenced to 12 years in prison. Seriously? He stole $50 billion dollars from his investors, ruining thousands of retirements. And most of that money, they'll never get back. And $50 billion is just what he's admitting to. Twelve years? Please. His victims are getting to face him in court today. I'd love to see that firsthand.
