John MatareseLots of people who join a health club lock in a one year contract -- or even pay upfront -- because it saves money.
But some TriStaters are now learning the downside of doing that, as Urban Active is cutting some of the programs that they joined for.
Classes are "No Longer on the Schedule"One woman told me that when she showed up for aerobics this week "I was told by the desk clerk that classes are no longer happening at my gym...that they have been canceled and are no longer on the schedule. I'm very upset."
Her Urban Active club on Colerain Avenue in Northgate will no longer offer fitness lessons. But since she prepaid $600 for the year, and signed a contract, she says she's stuck. To cancel her membership will cost nearly $299.
Cuts Programs at Smaller GymsUrban Active staffers tell us they are eliminating most fitness classes and child care at its smaller gyms at:
- Deerfield Township
- Western Hills (Glenway)
- Colerain Avenue, and
- Beechmont/Skytop
Staffers say it is converting those locations to "Express Gyms."
Urban Active tells me members can use those services at other locations. Classes and child care will continue at the larger gyms in Hyde Park, Bellevue Ky, Florence, and in the near future, Kenwood.
