Stop Those Marketers

Last Update: 2/21/2007 2:20 pm

Here are my suggestions for stopping mail, phone, and e-mail SPAM. Let me know what you think by sending e-mail to me at jmatarese@wcpo.com!

STOP SPAM E-MAIL

If you're tired of receiving junk e-mail, click on these links:

Purchase MailShell.com's "Spam Catcher"
This is a $3 per month service that will filter all your incoming mail for unwanted SPAM. Consumer Reports, Forbes magazine and CNet give it excellent reviews.

Purchase Blue Squirrel's "Mail Sleuth"
Consumer Reports also gives this product excellent reviews and it goes for about $30.

Purchase DigiPortal
The Wall Street Journal calls DigiPortal's "Choice Mail" system the most effective SPAM blocker made. It will cost $39, but it's worth it if you're bombarded by SPAM.

Visit MailWasher.net
This is a free program that inspects all your incoming mail, and highlights suspected Spam.

Visit JunkBusters.com

Please note: By installing a SPAM filter on your PC, you may block legitimate e-mail newsletters as well (such as the Don't Waste Your Money newsletter). Many of these filters will block all "bulk" mailings to your PC.

STOP POP-UP ADS AND SPYWARE
Do those "pop up" ads on your computer screen drive you crazy? Worse, you could have Spyware programs hiding in your PC.

Get Google's Toolbar For Internet Explorer
The toolbar is free and available for Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 or later. The toolbar is easy to install but only works with PC's -- sorry Mac folks.
Click here for the Google Toolbar

Learn More about Spyware
Here's a great site that explains "Spyware," and ways of avoiding it.

Get Spybot Search and Destroy
Top rated free program to find and eliminate "Spyware," which can cause excessive popup ads, hijack your home page, or steal info from your PC.
Click here for Spybot Search & Destroy

Try or Purchase Pop-up Stopper
Here's a good program to eliminate many pop-ups (Choose either a simple, free, version or a Premium version that comes with a fee).

STOP TELEMARKETERS

Hate those annoying phone calls? Here are some ways to block them:

Purchase The Telezapper
The $49 gadget is available at Radio Shack and Wal-Mart. I've tested this product and believe it works.

Visit JunkBusters.com
Junk Busters, again, has many helpful, free tips for stopping telemarketers.

Get on Do-Not-Call lists
Many states now allow you to sign up for Do-Not-Call lists. Contact your state's attorney general's office or the FTC.
Kentucky residents can click on kyattorneygeneral.com
For the national Do-Not-Call list click on ftc.gov

Write to the Direct Marketing Association
The DMA will put your name on the closest thing to a national do-not-call list. Registration is good for five years. Send your full name, home address, telephone number and signature in a letter to: DMA, P.O. Box 9014, Farmingdale, NY 11735.

STOP CREDIT CARD OFFERS

Call 1-888-5-OPT-OUT or optoutprescreen.com You will need to give your name, address and social security number. This is a secure service: it goes directly to the big three credit bureaus, who will then put a "block" on your credit file. When you call, you can indicate whether you would like to block your information for two years or permanently. If you have previously blocked your information and would like to "un-block" it, you can also do so by calling this number.
