HD 101: Sound Quality "Catch" on HDTV's

Last Update: 10/04/2007 6:10 pm

By now everyone knows that HDTV's look good.Their pictures are much sharper than standard Analog TV's.But how do they sound?

Today we dig a little deeper to talk about sound quality in "HD 101".

Most Standard Definition shows are broadcast in stereo, with two channels of audio. High definition TV takes audio another step beyond: Dolby 5.1 channel surround sound is the HD standard.

This consists of front and rear, right and left, a center speaker, and a subwoofer for the bass.

But there's a catch. You need a home theater system to enjoy the benefits of Dolby 5.1.HDTV's are designed to be run though a surround sound stereo system.

Their speakers tend to be tiny, and often on the side, not on the front.Without a surround sound system, the audio may sound weak. Yes, your old analog TV probably has better sounding speakers.
