HD 101: Plasma vs LCD vs DLP

Last Update: 9/19/2007 6:22 pm

Confused about the abc's of HDTV's?

You have LCD, DLP, and Plasma. All three look great, but all three give you a picture in a different way.

The best TV for your needs.... in todays edition of "HD 101."

LCD stands for "liquid crystal display." Their pictures are very bright...and they have a non-glare screen.

Experts say Plasma TV's give a richer picture. They typically have a shiny glass screen (a few now have a matte finish).

DLP stands for "digital light projection." These are like the projection TV's you remember, but with much sharper pictures, and a thinner box.

Which is Best for You?

  • DLP projection are the cheapest big sets, usually 48 inches and up. They cost substantially less than similar sized Plasma sets.

  • Plasma typically have the best picture, but are not good if you have window glare. Size for size, they tend to be pricier than LCD's.

  • LCD are the most affordable and most popular for sets smaller than 40 inches. They are almost "standard" now for bedrooms and kitchens.

A couple of years ago, Plasma were the most popular HDTVs.But lately, LCD's have soared in popularity...Because they're cheaper and come in more popular sizes like 32 inches. However, they all look good.

So don't waste your money! I'm John Matarese.
