All week we've been bringing you secrets to getting good reception of High Definition TV. Tonight the best secret of all: Free High Def channels on Basic Cable!

I have details in today's edition of “HD 101.”

Many people believe that to watch High Def cable TV, you need to have Digital Vable, and a cable box.

But I'll let you in on a little known secret: Your basic analog cable may be sending you High Def programming. But cable companies don't advertise this fact.

If you have basic analog cable, and buy an HDTV, here's what to do.

  • Plug the basic cable directly into the HDTV: You don’t need a cable box.
  • ”Autoprogram” your TV.
  • You may find Channel 9 in High Hef on Channel 9.1 (Nine point one) Still don’t see it? Your HDTV should let you enter 9.1 on your Remote.
  • If that works, you should also find other Cincinnati broadcast stations, such as WCET, Channel 48, in High Def (That will be 48.1)
However, you will NOT receive ESPN-HD or Discovery-HD. You will have to pay extra, and get a cable box, for those.

Also, this does not work on all cable systems and in all communities. But it works in many. This way you can watch free High Def cable TV without paying a premium, and you Don’t Waste Your Money. I’m John Matarese.
