Bob Vila Endorses EdenPure: Worth Buying?

Last Update: 11/11/2009 12:08 pm

Reported by: John Matarese

Viewers have been asking me about a space heater advertised in newspapers and in TV infomercials. For the 2009- 2010 winter, it is now being promoted by home repair celebrity Bob Vila.  It has to be good if Bob endorses it, right?

It's the EdenPure space heater .... a heater so "advanced," it can supposedly cut your heating bill up to 50%.The cost: almost $400...three to four times the price of most heaters.

But it looks like Bob never read the review from Consumer Reports Magazine. Two years ago, CR have tested it and other heaters.

Is the EdenPure Amazing?

The results of the test of the heavily advertised EdenPure were not promising.

The EdenPure ended up at the bottom of the ratings. Consumer Reports says it was the second worst performing of 20 space heaters tested in a scientific review. Click link for their full review.

Will the EdenPure or other Space Heaters lower your heating bills?

The short answer?  No, according to the US Department of Energy.

The DOE says space heaters can actually increase your heating bills, for the same amount of heating.  That's because electricity is more expensive than natural gas or oil to produce the same amount of heat.  Sure, your gas bill may drop, but your electric bill will soar.

The only way space heaters will lower your bills is if you turn down your furnace substantially, so that most of the house is around 50 degrees, experts say. You then must move the heater from room to room, as you go from the kitchen to living room to bedroom.  If you don't mind that amount of effort, and a cold house, then you will have a lower heating bill.
