Some Colors May Be Removed From Terror Alert System

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The nation's terror alert system could be getting less colorful. A special task force is expected to recommend that the Obama administration keep color-coded alerts, but reduce the number of colors -- or levels of risk.
A 60-day review period for the alert system concludes today. There are currently five colors in the coded terrorism advisories, long a target of late night TV comics and some Democrats who called it a tool for Bush administration political manipulation.
An official familiar with the review tells The Associated Press a bipartisan task force is expected to recommend reducing the alerts to three colors, or threat levels.
The review also determined the government's decisions for raising and lowering the terror alert levels need to be more transparent.
The system was put in place after Sept. 11, 2001.
