Police in Adams County, Ohio suspect the death of an elderly woman over the weekend may have been the result of serious neglect.
An investigation began Saturday morning after police received a call from the Meadowview Regional Hospital in Maysville, Kentucky about a patient they had admitted.
According to the Adams County Sheriff's Office, a man called an ambulance to take his mother, 93-year-old Hattie Stone of Manchester, to the hospital around 10 a.m.
When deputies arrived at the hospital, they found Stone suffering from what appeared to be serious neglect. According to officials, she appeared to have been exposed to severe cold and may have been without food.
Ms. Stone died later Saturday evening.
When deputies investigated her home on Gilkinson Hollow Road, they discovered the house to be without heat and food. Sheriff Kimmy Rogers says the only food in the home appeared to have been some peanut butter and some expired milk from October.
Police say Stone lived at the home with her son. He has not been charged, and the sheriff's office is waiting for autopsy results before ruling on the case.
The case remains under investigation by the Adams County Sheriff's Office and the Adams County Prosecutor's Office.
