9News has obtained the Ohio Highway State Patrol's report on last month's crash that injured Lockland Officer Brandon Gehring.

The report says a lack of communication between police departments may be at least partly to blame.

In an interview with an investigator, West Chester Police Officer Kevin Burger said he asked for stop-sticks to be deployed, but was never told it was being done.

Officer Burger was monitoring West Chester's radio system while chasing a robbery suspect on southbound I-75.

Officer Gerhing was critically hurt when Officer Burger's SUV cruiser hit him as he put down stop-sticks on the highway near Shepherd Lane.

According to the report, Officer Burger said, "I see stop-sticks fly in the air, like 10 or 15 feet in the air, and then I see Brandon in the slow speed lane in front of me and it's what am I gonna do."

Officer Burger said right before that moment, the suspect, Thomas Joyce,  jacknifed to the left on the highway and he followed him.

Officer Burger said he did his best to veer away from Officer Gehring, but didn't want to turn too hard for fear he would flip his SUV.

Officer Burger stopped immediately after the accident, ran to help Officer Gehring, and gave him CPR.

Officer Gehring remains in University Hospital where 9News is told  he is resting comfortably and his condition is improving.
