CINCINNATI (AP) -- Dozens of relatives of workers who died because of radiation or toxic materials at a Cold War-era uranium enrichment plant in Ohio say they should not be denied state workers' compensation death benefits.
They are fighting a ruling refusing them the benefits based on a missed deadline for filing claims. They say the government withheld information, so workers did not know they were working in a life-threatening environment.
Plaintiffs in a Pike County lawsuit include 38 people whose relatives worked at the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant about 80 miles east of Cincinnati.
The Department of Labor says nearly 3,800 Piketon workers or survivors submitted more than 9,000 claims and received compensation of almost $366 million.
