Middletown City Schools students may go to school without the necessary supplies.

The district's enrollment is over 6,700 students and Butler County typically gives close to 2,000 supply kits to needy children. But because of the county's budget woes, the kits will not be provided, according to Middletown City Schools community relations person Debbie Alberico.

The need is desperate. Soon classes will start and almost a third of its students aren't going to have the necessary tools for the classroom.

On the bright side, local businesses are trying to help.  Bentley Chiropractic Center in Middletown is hosting its eighth school supply drive through a patient appreciation day on Thursday. In exchange for a bag of supplies or cash donations, clients get their treatment for free.

Last year the office staff and patients raised over $700 in cash and filled an eight cubic foot box of supplies.
