Chronic wounds can develop from a number of different causes. In the basic sense, a wound is any break in the skin but a chronic wound will persist for more than 8 non-consecutive weeks or 4 consecutive weeks.

Mercy Health Partner's outpatient care provides a variety of some of the most advanced wound care treatments available, including a new hyperbaric chamber.

What Causes Chronic Wounds?
Chronic wounds can have a range of causes.

  • Diabetes is a leading factor in developing non-healing wounds, often due to poor circulation in the lower extremities. The disease's affects on the nervous system also make wound detection more difficult.
  • Obesity, high fat, and poor diets.
  • A history of smoking
  • Infections and overall poor circulation.

What Can Be Done About Chronic Wounds?
Mercy offers multiple treatments for non-healing wounds.  The dedicated team of doctors, nurses, dieticians, therapists and specialists provide every patient with individualized, comprehensive care that starts with a thorough evaluation of the wound and medical history.  The best course of action is determined by underlying causes looked at from a medical, social and nutritional standpoint. Once the wound and patient have been assessed, they are taken through a special program tailored to their personal needs.

Mercy's Wound Care Program, offers several new and advanced techniques in wound care, focused on the patient.  These include silver and pressure dressing, collagen treatments and Mercy's state-of-the-art hyperbaric chamber.  The hyperbaric chamber brings a new element to chronic wound care.  It provides a pure oxygen environment under pressure, which saturates the tissue with oxygen, increasing blood flow.  This increased blood flow greatly assists in healing and helps prevent some kinds of infections.

Beyond dressings and hyperbaric chambers, patients are educated on wound prevention and care.  From start to finish, Mercy is with you every step of the way.
