Healthy Ideas: January '09 - Healthy Weight Solutions

What is Mercy Healthy Weight Solutions?

Mercy Healthy Weight Solutions is the only program in Greater Cincinnati that offers the complete Circle of Caring for patients working toward healthy weight. Offering a unique, comprehensive approach, the extensive range of treatments and support programs include medical and surgical weight loss, nutrition, counseling, and fitness—all delivered in a sensitive, weight-friendly environment, and tailored to each patient’s individual needs. Mercy Healthy Weight Solutions even offers the only dedicated, private fitness facility in the region designed for weight-challenged patients. Why is obesity a problem?

Aside from not having the energy you’d like or the ability to do as many things as you could, the dangerous side effects of obesity are the potential 30 or so diseases it may cause. Diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease are just a few of the diseases associated with obesity. These can cause premature death or significantly lower the quality of life.

Am I a candidate for surgery?

Some patients may consider weight-loss surgery as an option. Anyone with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or higher, or 35 and higher with a disease, could be a candidate.  You can calculate your BMI easily yourself by using the BMI calculator on mercyhealthyweight.com.

What types of weight-loss surgery does Mercy offer?

Gastric Bypass, adjustable gastric banding, and others, depending on the desires and needs of the patient.

What can I expect after surgery?

Most patients lose up to 75% of body weight after surgery.  Effects of diseases like diabetes go away about 85% of the time, and many high blood pressure issues are resolved.  There are high cure rates.

What if I’m not a candidate or don’t want surgery?

There are multiple options if surgery is not for you. Mercy has comprehensive programs which include dieticians, physicians, and several HealthPlex facilities for exercise and wellness. The professionals are highly trained to help you get the best results, lose weight and improve your health, not just in the short term, but the long term, too.  Mercy professionals will work with you to establish goals for treatment.
