Mercy Health Partners is a leading-edge healthcare provider that features five award-winning hospitals, board-certified physicians, as well as a wide variety of programs and services, including state-of-the-art imaging and technology, and Women’s Health Services. Digital Mammography services are available at all five Mercy hospitals and Mercy imaging centers that offer mammography screenings.

According to the American Cancer Society, every woman over the age of 40 should receive a mammogram to screen for breast cancer every year. This screening procedure has been enhanced by new developments in breast cancer detection techniques. Digital Mammography is the same basic procedure as a traditional mammogram; however, a digital mammogram provides a much clearer picture of the breast tissue.

The possibility of being diagnosed with breast cancer isn’t something we want to think about, but there is an upside. Of the approximately 185,000 people who are diagnosed with the disease annually, 78% will survive because of early detection. And the importance of early detection is not limited to women; approximately 2,000 men die from this disease annually.

There are many things you can do to prevent and survive breast cancer. This is a curable disease if caught early.

Here are some risk factors associated with breast cancer:

  • Becoming a mother at an older age
  • Early puberty/menstruation in young girls
  • Ethnicity – African American women are at higher risk
  • Your family history with the disease
  • Any personal history with the disease

Helpful tips in the prevention of breast cancer include:

  • Performing self-exams beginning as early as your 20s. Be consistent and learn what’s normal for your breasts.
  • Maintaining a healthy lifestyle –
  • Avoiding excessive weight gain after menopause
  • Exercise regularly
  • Decrease alcohol intake
  • Avoid prolonged hormone replacement therapy which may increase your risk
  • Don’t smoke
  • Take daily vitamins
  • Get the proper amount of sleep
  • Speak with your physicians about your personal history and risk
  • Receive annual mammograms after age 40, and earlier if you know that you are at a higher risk

Benefits of a Digital Mammogram

Similar to a digital camera, a digital mammogram offers full field detection aided by a computer. The x-ray picture clarity is greatly enhanced, especially for women with very dense breast tissue. The doctor can actually see through the tissue, in much more detail, enabling him to see smaller calcifications than with a traditional mammogram. All of this helps the physician who interprets the mammogram.

Mammograms can detect cancer early, allowing you to get the treatment you need at an early stage in the disease. Catching the disease early not only dramatically increases your chance of survival, but it typically gives you sufficient time to evaluate your treatment options. Please, don’t wait to get tested. As one cancer survivor points out, mammograms may hurt for a minute, but they don’t hurt as much as cancer. Mercy Health Partners wants you to live a long and healthy life, as does your family. Schedule your mammogram today.

Digital Mammograms are available at all five Mercy hospitals as well as Mercy imaging centers that provide mammography.
