When people hunt for replacement parts and are driven to save money, they can find a huge savings at the salvage yard.
Steve Gains works at Bessler Auto Parts in Hebron, Ky. Gains says, "If you are wrenching on your own, or trying to save a dollar, you need to come visit us here."
Shoppers like Vince Howard of Covington get out to the proverbial junk yard before he goes to a store, "Some of these parts will cost you hundreds and hundreds of dollars. In the way this economy is, you gotta save every dime you can to make ends meet," said Howard.
The pricing varies on the parts. Gains gave an example of a starter.
"A majority of the vehicles you're looking at $25 plus tax. A brand new one, depending on the vehicle you're looking anywhere between, conservatively, $60 to $100," he says.
According to Gains, parts are less expensive at the salvage yard by 50% to 75%.
Of course, junk yards are no big secret. However, Gains emphasized that they can be a dangerous place to be, and people should keep their guard up while harvesting parts from vehicles.
