Job Applicant Speaks Out About City’s Ban On Hiring Felons

Last Update: 6/24 1:08 am
We're hearing from the job applicant who is trying to change the City of Cincinnati's ban on hiring convicted felons.

His name is Gene Mays. He served time for dealing drugs, but that was more than a decade ago. He's been clean ever since.

Despite passing the civil service exam and being offered a job with the Metropolitan Sewer District, Mays was ultimately turned down because of his old record.

"You're taking what I have done in my last 10 or 11 years and just saying this is not valid,” Mays said.

"We're not asking the city to put a convicted sex offender in the parks,” said David Singleton, his attorney. “But for someone like Mr. Mays, who has rehabilitated himself and has proven to be an exemplary member of the community, he ought to not be subject to a blanket policy."

The issue is before Cincinnati city council, which is considering a change to allow rehabilitated felons to work for the city.
