Two local animal welfare groups are the recipients of thousands of dollars from Kroger and Purina.

The League for Animal Welfare and the US Police Canine Association came to Channel 9 Monday evening to premiere a one-hour TV special called Four Plus Two: Tales For The Pet Lovers Heart.

The project recognizes the role animal shelters play in building relationships between pets and people.

"The whole idea is the pet and people connection, and how important pets are in our lives," said Addie Rosenthal, of the Blind Squirrels Production Group.

"In recognition of that, Purina and Kroger are giving $100,000 to animal shelters across the country and [they are] also trying to raise awareness of homeless pets and the need to support local shelters," said Rosenthal.

Four Plus Two: Tales For The Pet Lover's Heart will air on Channel 9 on October 17 at 9 p.m.
