Anthony (Tony) Mirones came to WCPO 9 News in January of 2004 to join our national award winning I-TEAM. While here he has won numerous awards for his photography, editing, and producing.
Mirones worked in five other television markets before coming to Cincinnati. His first station was in Findlay, OH where he did everything. Actually, he ran the audio board and studio cameras during broadcasts only after shooting, writing, producing, and reporting for the newscasts. He also anchored the 10PM news for WFND-TV 47, all while he was a full time student at
Bluffton College (now Bluffton University).
After graduating with a B.A. in Communication in 1995, he headed to Fort Wayne where was a full time photojournalist for the Granite Broadcasting ABC affiliate
WPTA. During his brief time there, he won his first journalism award from the Indiana News Photographers Association for a flood in Adams County.
He went to Knoxville, TN in 1997 where he produced and shot sports for the CBS affiliate
WVLT. He followed
Peyton Manning during his senior year with the Volunteers. His most memorable moment was traveling around the Southeast and finishing in Miami, FL for the
FedEx Orange Bowl where
Nebraska beat
Tennessee 42-17.
Shortly after the game, he went to the NBC affiliate
WAVE 3 News in Louisville, KY. His job consisted of being a general assignment photojournalist. While there, Mirones won two
Emmy® Awards, numerous Kentucky Associated Press, Society of Professional Journalists, Kentucky News Photographers, and National Press Photographers awards. During is final year in Louisville, his team of photojournalists were honored with being named the National Press Photographers Division II Station of the Year.
Since becoming a member of the 9 News staff, He has won five more Emmy® Awards, place second runner up in the Ohio News Photographers Association in 2005, a National Headliners Award from the Atlantic City Press Club, and a coveted Sigma Delta Chi award from the national Society of Professional Journalists. Most recently, he won for the
Ohio SPJ First Place Best Editor and Second Place Best Photographer. His role with the I-TEAM was to research, shoot video, and edit investigative stories with partner Hagit Limor. Mirones was promoted to a Multimedia Journalist (MMJ) in August of 2008. He uses all of his story telling skills from researching, shooting, editing, writing, presenting, and producing stories on a daily basis, as his title suggests, for multiple platforms: all WCPO newscasts, internet (wcpo.com and
kypost.com) and radio.
Mirones is also a professional leader. He has served on the Kentucky News Photographers Association board of directors, Ohio News Photographers Association Television Vice President. Currently he is the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Television Arts and Sciences President.
He firmly believes in teaching young journalists to become better and is passionate about striving for excellence.
